Where Is My Amended Return? How to Check Form 1040-X Status and How Long It Takes

Amended returns usually take 8 to 12 weeks, and the IRS status tool works three weeks after you file. See what Received, Adjusted and Completed mean.

Published October 26, 2026 · Tax question answered

Plan on about 8 to 12 weeks for the IRS to process an amended return on Form 1040-X, and up to 16 weeks in some cases. You can check progress with the IRS tool called Where's My Amended Return? starting three weeks after you file. It does not show a delivery date, only a stage.

How long does an amended return take?

The IRS tells filers to generally allow 8 to 12 weeks for a Form 1040-X, which is much slower than an original return. Some take up to 16 weeks. E-filing the amendment can save a week or two because it skips mail time, but it does not change the review that follows.

An amended return takes longer when it has an error, is incomplete or is missing a signature. Form 8379 (injured spouse allocation), suspected identity theft or fraud, routing to a specialized area, bankruptcy clearance, review by a revenue officer, or an appeal can also add time. If the IRS needs more information, it contacts you by mail.

When can you check, and what do you need?

The status tool shows information three weeks after you submit the form. You can use it without signing in by entering your Social Security number, date of birth and ZIP code. You can also sign in to your IRS individual online account, which shows amended return status, refund status and tax records in one place.

The tool covers the current year and the three prior years. It cannot show every kind of return. The IRS lists these as outside the tool:

  • Business returns
  • Carryback applications and claims
  • Injured spouse claims
  • A Form 1040 marked "amended" or "corrected" instead of Form 1040-X
  • Returns with a foreign address
  • Returns being handled by a specialized unit such as Examination or Bankruptcy

What do the three statuses mean?

StatusWhat the IRS says it means
ReceivedThe return arrived and is being processed.
AdjustedA change was made to your account. This can mean a refund, a balance due or no change in tax.
CompletedProcessing is finished and details are mailed to you.

Adjusted does not tell you whether you will get money or owe money. Wait for the letter, which explains the result and any change from what you claimed.

What happens to the refund or the balance?

If you e-filed the amendment and are owed a refund, direct deposit is available for tax year 2021 and later. Enter the bank details on the form. If you owe more tax, pay when you file. There is no deadline for paying, but interest runs from the original due date, so paying sooner limits it. Our amended return guide covers the three-year and two-year refund windows.

Example

This example uses invented facts. Dev, a Naperville contractor, e-files a Form 1040-X on March 2 to add a deduction he missed. On March 9 the tool shows nothing, which is normal because three weeks have not passed. On March 23 it shows Received. In mid-April it shows Adjusted, and a letter arrives a week later explaining the result. He did not file a second amendment in between, which would have confused the review.

Common mistakes

  • Checking in the first week and assuming the return was lost.
  • Filing a second Form 1040-X for the same change because the first seems slow.
  • Using the tool for a return it does not cover, such as one with a foreign address.
  • Treating Adjusted as a refund confirmation.
  • Ignoring a letter from the IRS asking for more information.

What to do next

  1. Keep your copy of the Form 1040-X and proof of filing.
  2. Check status in week three, then every couple of weeks.
  3. If you pass 16 weeks, or a letter arrives that you do not understand, review it before you respond. Our guide on whether an IRS letter is real is a good first step.

Frequently asked questions

How long should I wait before worrying about an amended return?

The IRS says 8 to 12 weeks, with some taking up to 16. Beyond that, check the status tool and your mail for a request for information.

Can I check an amended return for an older year?

The tool covers the current year and the three prior years. For earlier years, the IRS does not offer the online tool.

Does e-filing an amended return make it faster?

It can save one or two weeks of mail time, according to the IRS. The review itself takes about as long.

Can I file a second amended return while I wait?

The IRS page we read does not address this. It says you can e-file up to three amended returns per tax year, and later attempts are rejected. Ask a professional before filing again for the same change.

What does Adjusted mean?

It means a change was made to your account. It does not say whether you get a refund, owe more or see no change. The mailed letter gives the result.
