CPA for San Antonio, TX Clients: Remote Tax, Payroll and Accounting

Remote CPA help for San Antonio families and owners: Bexar appraisal protests, disabled-veteran exemptions, military spouse tax residency, franchise reports.

Reviewed October 2026 · Plain-language guide

From our Naperville, Illinois office we work with San Antonio clients remotely; there is no Texas office. Because the Texas Constitution (Article VIII, Section 24-a) bars a tax on the net incomes of individuals, the useful questions in Bexar County are different ones: how your property is valued and billed, which state a military household owes income tax to, and whether a small medical or business entity still owes a franchise tax filing.

Military households: no Texas tax, but another state may apply

Military OneSource explains that the Servicemembers Civil Relief Act now gives service members and spouses three ways to fix state residence for income tax: the service member's residence or domicile, the spouse's residence or domicile, or the service member's permanent duty station. A spouse may even choose the service member's state of legal residence without having lived there. The protection covers only active-duty military pay. Other income, such as rental income, is taxable by the state where it is earned.

In practice, a service member stationed in San Antonio but legally resident elsewhere may still file in the home state, and a rental house in a third state may require a return there, because Military OneSource says income from rental property is taxable by the state where it is earned. Spouses who work as nurses, therapists or in small businesses should confirm which residence they have chosen before payroll or estimated payments begin. Our multi-state tax service covers these returns.

Property tax: appraisal, exemptions and payment plans

The Bexar Central Appraisal District (BCAD) sets values; it does not collect. In April 2026 it said it had reviewed more than 734,000 properties and mailed notices to about 196,000 owners, a continued decrease from prior years. BCAD gave May 15 as the protest deadline and says protests may be filed through its online portal, in person or by mail. Your own notice controls the date.

For disabled veterans, the Comptroller lists exemptions of up to $5,000 for ratings of 10% to 29%, $7,500 for 30% to 49%, $10,000 for 50% to 69% and $12,000 for 70% to 100%. Disabled veterans, surviving spouses and surviving children have up to five years after the delinquency date to file for this exemption. The same FAQ points to a separate exemption for veterans rated 100% disabled and a total homestead exemption for the unmarried surviving spouse of a service member killed in the line of duty.

Bills come from the Bexar County Tax Assessor-Collector, a separate office, and the county says missing a bill does not extend the due date. Its 2026 calendar offers:

  • A half-payment plan for anyone: first half by November 30, 2026, second half by June 30, 2027.
  • A quarter-payment plan for homeowners with a homestead exemption plus a 65-or-older, disabled or disabled-veteran exemption: payments by January 31, March 31, May 31 and July 31, 2027.
  • A 10-month plan for the same group, started by paying the amount on the statement by the end of October.
  • A February payment costs 7% (6% penalty plus 1% interest) under the county's table.

Franchise tax for practices and small businesses

Medical and dental practices, consultants and home-based businesses are often LLCs, and an LLC can owe a Texas franchise tax filing even with no tax due. For report years 2026 and 2027 the Comptroller sets the no-tax-due line at $2,650,000, up from $2,470,000 for 2024 and 2025. An entity at or below that line sends in a Public Information Report or Ownership Report instead of tax. Filings are due May 15, moving to the next business day when that date is a weekend or holiday, and each late report draws a $50 penalty. A missed report can bring Form 05-211, a Notice of Intent to Forfeit the Right to Transact Business. Rates and the EZ method are on our Texas page, and our Houston page covers sales tax and protests for Harris County.

The Indian-American community and US-India tax in San Antonio

The San Antonio-New Braunfels metro area includes about 22,900 people who are Asian Indian alone or in combination, about 0.9% of the population. Bexar County has about 20,600 (1.0%), according to the American Community Survey 2020 to 2024 5-year, Table B02018. On its jurisdiction page the Consulate General of India in Houston lists Texas as a whole, effective August 1, 2025; San Antonio and Bexar County are not named separately.

With no state income tax, the India-related questions here are mostly federal:

How we can help

Everything is handled by secure upload, phone and video: federal returns, state returns for income earned elsewhere, franchise and information reports, payroll and bookkeeping for medical practices and small businesses, and IRS or state notices. For a matter that needs a Texas-licensed professional, or a local representative at an appraisal review hearing, we will say so. Our business tax preparation service and our physicians and healthcare professionals page give more detail.

Frequently asked questions

When was the Bexar County protest deadline for 2026?

BCAD gave May 15, 2026, and says protests are free. Check the date on your own notice each year.

How much is the disabled veteran property tax exemption in Texas?

The Comptroller lists up to $5,000, $7,500, $10,000 or $12,000, depending on whether the rating is 10% to 29%, 30% to 49%, 50% to 69% or 70% to 100%.

I am a military spouse in San Antonio. Which state taxes my wages?

It depends on the state of legal residence you and your service member have chosen. Wages are generally taxed under that state's laws, so confirm the choice first.

My small LLC is under the franchise tax line. Can I skip the filing?

No. Below $2,650,000 there is no tax, but the entity still files the Public Information Report or Ownership Report with its May 15 filing. Skipping it can bring a forfeiture notice.

Can I split my Bexar County tax bill?

The Tax Assessor-Collector offers a half-payment plan for anyone, with the first half due November 30, 2026 and the second by June 30, 2027.
