Schaumburg is a northwest Cook County village of about 77,000 residents where a large Indian-American community and the Cook County property tax system come together. If you are looking for a Schaumburg CPA, this page covers the Cook County system, the Village's own taxes and the issues that matter to households with ties to India, and explains how our Naperville office serves clients here in person by appointment or online.
The community
The Census Bureau's American Community Survey (2020-2024 five-year estimates) counts about 76,900 residents. About 33 percent were born outside the United States, which is the highest share among the places we cover, and about 24 percent identify as Asian alone. About 10,200 people (13 percent) identify as Asian Indian alone, and about 7,700 (10 percent) were born in India, though the margins of error are meaningful. Median household income is about $98,000, about 63 percent of occupied homes are owner-occupied and about 50 percent of adults hold a bachelor's degree or higher. Education and health care, professional services and manufacturing lead employment.
For Indian-American households, tax work often includes reporting accounts and assets in India. See our guides on FBAR for Indian bank accounts, Form 8938, PFIC rules for Indian mutual funds, NRE, NRO and FCNR accounts, rental income from India and selling property in India.
Village taxes
According to the Village's Taxes and Fees page, Schaumburg collects taxes on amusements, automobile leasing, prepared food and beverages, real estate transfers, local motor fuel and telecommunications. It also collects a 1 percent home rule sales tax on general merchandise, excluding groceries and licensed vehicles, which the Illinois Department of Revenue collects and remits. The page lists the amusement surcharge at 5 percent, paid by the patron and remitted monthly by the owner, and the automobile lease tax at $1.00 per vehicle per lease period, remitted quarterly. The Village's finance pages also mention hotel and convention center funds.
The State's sales tax rate is 6.25 percent, and the Tax Rate Finder on MyTax Illinois gives the rate for an address. See our sales and use tax service.
Cook County property tax
Most of Schaumburg lies in Cook County, with a small part touching DuPage County, and the Assessor's calendar lists Schaumburg Township. Cook County works differently from the collar counties: the County Assessor values property, a separate Board of Review hears appeals after the Assessor, and the Cook County Treasurer issues the bills. The Assessor reassesses about one-third of the county each year, and the north and northwest suburbs, which include Schaumburg Township, were reassessed in 2025. Notice and appeal dates are set township by township. An appeal challenges your assessed value, not the tax rate. See Cook County and state and local tax deductions.
Employers: payroll and paid leave
Employers register with IDES for unemployment insurance. The Illinois Paid Leave for All Workers Act, in effect since January 1, 2024, gives most workers up to 40 hours of paid leave a year, but according to the Illinois Department of Labor it does not apply to employers already covered by a county or municipal ordinance that requires paid leave, and it names the Cook County Paid Leave Ordinance as one example. Schaumburg employers should check which rule applies. See payroll services and state unemployment insurance.
