Woodridge sits between Naperville, Downers Grove and Bolingbrook. It is a home rule village, and according to the Census Bureau's county boundary file it touches three counties: DuPage, Will and Cook. Both facts affect how local taxes work. This page explains what home rule means for a Woodridge resident or business, what happened to the grocery tax in 2026, and how we help from our nearby Naperville office.
What home rule means here
In Illinois, home rule units of local government have extra authority. The Illinois Department of Revenue notes that home rule units can impose a home rule sales tax, collected by the State, on the same base as the state sales tax, excluding vehicles and qualifying food, drugs and medical appliances. Woodridge's Municipal Taxes page also says home rule means the Village is not bound by the property tax caps that limit non-home rule communities, but that the Village Board has self-imposed those caps. The Village also follows the Local Government Taxpayers' Bill of Rights ordinance, which sets procedures for locally imposed taxes such as utility and occupation taxes.
Business owners should confirm local taxes for their own location instead of assuming they match the next town. The State rate is 6.25 percent, and the Tax Rate Finder on MyTax Illinois shows what applies to an address and period. See our sales and use tax service if you collect and remit.
The 2026 grocery tax change
Until January 1, 2026, Illinois collected a 1 percent state sales tax on groceries and shared the revenue with local governments. A 2024 law ended the State's tax on that date but allowed municipalities and counties to impose a local 1 percent tax on qualifying groceries by filing an ordinance with the Department of Revenue. The Woodridge Village Board approved the reinstatement of a 1 percent municipal grocery tax, so grocery shoppers in the village pay it in place of the state tax.
Residents and employers
The Census Bureau's American Community Survey (2020-2024 five-year estimates) counts about 33,900 residents. About 21 percent were born outside the United States, about 12 percent identify as Asian alone and about 5 percent (roughly 1,700 people) identify as Asian Indian alone. Median household income is about $101,000 and about 68 percent of occupied homes are owner-occupied, so a sizable share of households rent. Employed residents work mostly in education and health care, professional and administrative services, retail and manufacturing, and about 23 percent work from home.
For households with India ties, see our guides on NRE, NRO and FCNR accounts and the US-India tax treaty. For landlords with a Woodridge rental, see rental property taxes.
Property tax across county lines
Your tax bill names the county that collects. DuPage uses township assessors and a Board of Review; Will County has its own Treasurer, Supervisor of Assessments and Board of Review; Cook County has its own Assessor, Board of Review and Treasurer. If your parcel sits in a part of Woodridge that is outside DuPage, appeal deadlines and exemptions follow that county's rules. See our pages for DuPage, Will and Cook counties.

Frequently asked questions
Does home rule mean Woodridge has a local income tax?
No. Illinois has no municipal or county income tax. Home rule gives the Village more flexibility on certain taxes, such as a home rule sales tax and utility taxes. See our Illinois guide.
Do I pay a grocery tax in Woodridge?
Since January 1, 2026, the State no longer charges its 1 percent grocery tax. The Village reinstated a 1 percent municipal grocery tax, so check your receipt.
Which county's rules apply to my property?
The county named on your bill. Most Woodridge addresses are in DuPage, but the village's boundaries also touch Will and Cook.
