Creating content for YouTube, Instagram, TikTok, Twitch, a podcast or a newsletter can turn into a real business faster than most people expect. Once money, free products or sponsorships arrive, the IRS expects the income to be reported, and you can deduct the costs of producing the content. This page is for creators and influencers in Naperville, Aurora, Chicagoland and beyond who want to keep clean records and avoid surprises.
Income streams and how they are treated
| Source | Typical paperwork | Tax note |
|---|---|---|
| Ad and platform payouts | Form 1099-NEC, 1099-MISC or 1099-K | Business income; platform fees are deductible |
| Brand deals and sponsorships | Form 1099-NEC or none | Cash plus the value of products or trips |
| Affiliate commissions | Form 1099-NEC or 1099-MISC | Business income even if paid in small amounts |
| Subscriptions, memberships | Form 1099-K or 1099-NEC | Gross amounts, before platform fees |
| Viewer tips and gifts | Platform statements | Income; may qualify for the tips deduction |
| Merchandise and products | 1099-K, sales records | Inventory, cost of goods and sales tax |
The federal Form 1099-K threshold is more than $20,000 and more than 200 transactions, and Form 1099-NEC is required for payments of $2,000 or more made after 2025 (it was $600 before). A lack of a form does not make income tax free. See Form 1099-NEC and 1099-K.
Free products, trips and barter
When a brand sends you products or pays for a trip in return for posts, the fair market value is generally income in the year you receive it. The IRS says bartering income is reported at fair market value, on Schedule C when it is business-related (Topic 420). Keep the brand's name, value, date and a copy of the agreement. Items you keep for personal use are taxable income but not deductible costs; items you use only in content may be both income and a business expense.
Business or hobby
The IRS looks at whether you carry on the activity to make a profit. Hobby activities limit the deductions you can take and generally cannot offset other income (Publication 334). Signs of a business include a separate bank account, a content plan, time spent, marketing efforts and a profit trend. Costs before launch are generally start-up costs, with a limited amount deductible in the first year and the rest spread over 180 months.
Deductions creators miss
- Equipment. Cameras, lights, microphones and computers. Items of $2,500 or less per item or invoice can often be deducted immediately; larger purchases may qualify for Section 179 or bonus depreciation.
- Software and services. Editing apps, music licenses, stock footage, hosting, analytics, scheduling tools.
- Home studio. A space used regularly and exclusively for content. The simplified method allows $5 per square foot up to 300 square feet. See the home office guide.
- People. Editors, managers, agents and assistants. Report contractor payments on Form 1099-NEC when required.
- Travel and production. Location shoots, props and wardrobe that is not suitable for everyday wear, and 50 percent of business meals.
- Training. Courses that maintain or improve skills in your current work.
The new tips deduction
For tax years 2025 through 2028, "digital content creators," which the IRS describes to include streamers, online video creators, social media influencers and podcasters, are on the list of occupations that customarily receive tips. Qualified tips must be voluntary and paid by customers or fans, and reported on a W-2, 1099 or Form 4137. Sponsorship fees, ad revenue, subscriptions and negotiated payments are not tips. The deduction is limited to net income from the business, phases out at higher income, and is not available to workers in a specified service trade or business, so ask whether yours qualifies.
Sales tax, states and foreign income
Selling merchandise, and in some states digital products, can require sales tax registration. Illinois requires remote retailers to collect tax once they have $100,000 in cumulative Illinois receipts or 200 separate transactions in the prior 12 months, and other states set their own thresholds. Marketplaces may collect on your behalf, but confirm before relying on them. See sales and use tax and sales tax nexus.
If you are paid by a brand abroad, or are a visa holder, extra rules apply. Immigration rules may limit self-employment, and foreign income, tax withholding and accounts can bring FBAR and foreign tax credit questions. See foreign tax credit for India income. Payments in cryptocurrency are covered in our crypto tax guide.
