We are a Naperville, Illinois CPA firm, and we serve Las Vegas and Henderson clients remotely; we have no office in Nevada. Nevada has no personal income tax, so tax questions here come from somewhere else: gambling winnings, tips, a property tax system with its own caps and an unusual January deadline, and a county with six business licensing jurisdictions. Our Nevada page covers the statewide business taxes.
No state income tax, but federal gambling and tip rules
The Department of Taxation says Nevada does not impose a state income tax on individuals, so a Las Vegas wage earner files no Nevada return. The federal return carries more weight. Gambling winnings are fully taxable, and a payer may send a Form W-2G. You can deduct losses only if you itemize and keep records, and the deduction cannot exceed winnings. For 2026, IRS Publication 505 adds a second limit of 90 percent of losses.
Example: with $10,000 of winnings and $10,000 of losses in 2026, the deduction would be $9,000, leaving $1,000 of net taxable income. In earlier years it would have been $10,000.
Tips are the other big item. The IRS says tipped workers may deduct up to $25,000 of qualified tips, with income phase-outs, for the 2025 return. The IRS occupation list includes gambling dealers (blackjack, craps, poker and roulette dealers and pit clerks), slot attendants and other change persons, casino cashiers and cage workers, and sports book writers and runners. Check whether your job maps to a listed occupation. See our guide to the new tips and overtime deductions and our page for restaurants and retail.
Clark County property tax: caps, dates and appeals
Clark County gives written notice of assessed value on or before December 18 under Nevada law. A taxpayer may appeal to the County Board of Equalization on or before January 15; if that is a weekend or holiday, the next business day. The Board meets from mid-January through mid-March and cannot hear appeals about tax rate increases or abatements.
Nevada's abatement works on the tax bill. The county's tax abatement page explains a 3 percent cap on the tax bill for the owner's primary residence, which can be only one property in Nevada, and a cap of up to 8 percent on other property. Under NRS 361.4723 and 361.4722, these caps limit how much a bill can rise over the previous year's bill. Two details matter:
- Any recorded ownership document removes the 3 percent abatement, and you complete a new postcard to keep it for the next year. A refinance without an ownership document does not.
- Some rentals can qualify for the 3 percent cap if rents stay within HUD limits. For 2026-27 the maximums are $1,146 for a studio, $1,270 for one bedroom, $1,504 for two, $2,139 for three and $2,456 for four. Owners of duplexes, triplexes, fourplexes and apartments get rental affidavit letters in April or May.
Taxes over $100 can be paid in four installments, due the third Monday in August and the first Monday in October, January and March. The Treasurer says these are not quarterly. A payment within 10 days of the due date avoids a penalty, and one late installment carries a 4 percent penalty, with higher percentages if more installments are late. If taxes are unpaid at the close of business on the first Monday in June, the county holds the property under a two-year redemption period. Our rental property taxes guide covers the federal side.
Business licensing, payroll tax and the Commerce Tax
Clark County says it comprises six jurisdictions, each with its own licensing agency: Henderson, Las Vegas, North Las Vegas, Boulder City, Mesquite and unincorporated Clark County. Your business location decides where you apply, and each agency has its own rules. Unincorporated Clark County adds a $45 non-refundable application fee.
Three state items affect employers here. The Modified Business Tax is figured on total gross wages and reported tips, less employer-paid health benefits. The first $50,000 of wages remains non-taxable, but every employer must file a return regardless of tax due. Businesses with more than $4 million of Nevada gross revenue owe the Commerce Tax, and the Department says a credit against the MBT is available to businesses that meet certain criteria. A 30-day extension form exists for the Commerce Tax. Our payroll services cover MBT and unemployment filings.
The Indian-American community and US-India tax in Las Vegas
Clark County, which is the Las Vegas-Henderson-North Las Vegas metro area, has about 16,100 residents who identify as Asian Indian alone or in combination (about 0.7%). Henderson has about 4,600 (1.4%) and the city of Las Vegas about 2,500 (0.4%), according to the American Community Survey 2020 to 2024 5-year, Table B02018. Estimates for single cities have wide margins of error.
The Consulate General of India's 2025 jurisdiction table places Nevada under Los Angeles, which also covers Southern California, Arizona and New Mexico. It adds that the San Francisco consulate provides only passport services for that jurisdiction until further notice.
- Home-country accounts. NRE, NRO and FCNR accounts have different tax and reporting treatment.
- Property sales. Selling an apartment or land is covered in selling property in India.
- Tax credits. Nevada has no income tax, so the foreign tax credit for Indian tax matters only on your federal return.
How we can help
From Naperville, we prepare federal returns, including gambling and tip reporting, state returns for other states you may owe, payroll, bookkeeping and IRS notice reviews, and we handle US-India tax. You send documents electronically and we talk by phone or video. If a matter requires a license in Nevada or a local professional, we will say so. This page is general information.
Frequently asked questions
Do I file a Nevada income tax return?
No. The Department of Taxation says Nevada does not impose a state income tax on individuals. You still file federal returns, and another state may tax work done there.
When must I appeal my Clark County assessment?
On or before January 15, with the County Board of Equalization. Notices are due by December 18.
Does a refinance cost me my 3 percent cap?
Not by itself. The county says a refinance without an ownership document does not affect it, but any recorded ownership document removes it until you file a new postcard.
How much of my gambling losses can I deduct in 2026?
The lesser of 90 percent of losses or winnings, and only if you itemize.
Which Indian consulate serves Nevada?
Los Angeles, according to the 2025 jurisdiction table.
